Description

The stable and adjoining lofted byre, located to the north-east of Forest Lodge Farmhouse, dates back to 1849 for the stable and 1867 for the byre, as indicated on the lintels. The structure is built from coursed roughly-tooled and herringbone-tooled sandstone, topped with pantiled roofs. The stable is a single storey with three wide bays, featuring three stable doors, with the central door under a dated lintel. There is a small blocked window above and a slit window above the right-hand door, where the building is higher due to the sloping land, suggesting that this end was likely lofted. The adjoining byre is also one storey with a loft and has a basement at the far right, consisting of six irregular bays. It includes two small windows, two loft doors, and two blocked basement feeding chutes that indicate the presence of pigsties. All openings are framed with heavy lintels, most of which are slightly shouldered. The roofs are finished with stone copings and feature anachronistic square kneelers.
