Description
The threshing barn located to the east of Forest Lodge Farmhouse is a small structure dated 1832, as indicated on the lintel panel, and features the initials L.D. It is attached to a taller barn on the right, which is dated 1863 and bears the initials L. Dale. Both barns are constructed from coursed, herringbone-tooled sandstone. The smaller barn has a pantiled roof, while the taller barn is topped with Welsh slate, and both roofs have stone copings and square kneelers.
The threshing barn is one and a half storeys high and consists of three narrow bays, with central opposed doors and flanking slit vents. Above the slits are boarded pitching doors. Notably, there is a cross formed of black tiles in the roof, which is said to be a holy sign to ward off evil. The attached barn is two storeys tall with two bays, featuring a boarded door with a dated lintel, one small blocked window, and a boarded loft door.
Behind the threshing barn, there is a circular raised stone platform that was used for an open-air horse-driven threshing machine. This threshing barn is the earliest building in a series constructed between 1832 and 1867 by Leonard Dale, who gradually developed a complete planned farm around a beautifully paved sloping yard.
