Description
High Ewecote and the attached outbuilding is a farmhouse, possibly a longhouse, that has been rebuilt multiple times on the site of an earlier grange belonging to Rievaulx Abbey. It dates from the early 18th century and features several construction phases. The main house is built from herringbone-tooled sandstone set on a low plinth, with larger stonework on the lower part of the downhouse and medium-sized stone above. The outbuilding is made of coursed pecked sandstone on a plinth. Both structures have pantiled roofs with stone ridges, copings, kneelers, and stacks.
The farmhouse has a hearth-passage plan and stands two storeys high, with a two-window main house and a narrower two-window downhouse. There is a modern passage door on the right side of the downhouse and a small fire window to the right. Most of the windows are modern casements set in old openings, except for one altered opening to the left of the door. The roof is high-pitched with block kneelers, a corniced ridge, and end chimneys.
The two-storey, two-bay outbuilding on the left features two stable doors and two small windows, all beneath a long, heavy dressed lintel divided into five parts. An external stone stair leads to a boarded door in the gable end. The outbuilding also has two gabled rear extensions and a lower lean-to. Inside the house, there are beamed ceilings. An extruded part-timbered porch is present but is not considered of special interest.
