Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a parish church built between 1896 and 1898 by architect Temple Moore. It is constructed of pecked coursed sandstone with dressings and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof, complete with a stone ridge, copings, and a stone spire. The church is designed in the Decorated style and includes a west tower, a continuous nave and chancel, and a north aisle.

The square tower has three stages and is supported by stepped diagonal buttresses. It features a stepped and moulded plinth, a Y-tracery west window with a clock above, and small openings on the north and south sides, with Y-traceried bell openings above. The tower is topped with a short octagonal broach spire that has lucarnes and a vane. The north aisle is covered by a catslide roof, and the east window showcases cusped reticulated tracery.

At the entrance, twin bootscrapers flank four steps leading to the door. Inside, the church has a plastered interior with stone dressings. The arches of the four-bay aisle are moulded and chamfered, transitioning into diagonal chamfered piers. The east bay and the eastward extension are panelled off as a vestry. A tall, pointed tower arch leads into the nave, which features a ribbed barrel roof, while the tower has a coffered roof. The church contains good, apparently original woodwork, including benches, a pulpit, choir seating, and desks. The chancel and sanctuary have chequered stone paving, and there is a moulded piscina in the south wall. A carved vestry door displays a monogram under a long Caernarvon arch.
