Description
The Forge is a house comprising three building phases, dating from the 18th century to the 19th century. The central section is dated 1723 on a chimney, with extensions added to either side likely in the later 18th century and 19th century. The centre is built of herringbone-tooled coursed sandstone, the right side of similar but larger sandstone blocks, and the left side of pecked sandstone. A low plinth is present on the centre and left sections. The roof is pantiled with a stone ridge, copings, and stacks. The house has two storeys and one, two, and one bays respectively. A boarded door is located to the right of the left bay. All front windows are Yorkshire sash windows with stone sills; the central section has tooled-and-margined lintels, the left section plain, and the right section herringbone-tooled. Corniced ashlar stacks are at the left ends of the earlier parts, with a herringbone-tooled stack on the right. The rear elevation features a recent extension under a catslide roof, constructed of matching materials and with five modern casements and a glazed door. The interior of the oldest section includes chamfered main beams and joists. One original plain principal-rafter roof truss remains, although the ridge piece, purlins, and some principal rafters have been replaced in other parts of the roof.
