Description

The Water Mill at Low Mill Farm is a restored watermill, likely dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed tooled sandstone and features a concrete-tiled roof with a stone ridge, copings, and stack. The building is two storeys high and has two bays. There is a boarded door on the right side, and three-light fixed windows are located on the ground floor to the right and on the first floor to the left. To the left, there is a set-back lean-to wheelhouse and a mill race wall that projects to the left. The oak undershot wheel has been restored by Hauxwells of Yarm. The mill has three-bay returns with small casements in the gable ends and a loading door. The rear elevation includes an opening for the shaft.

Inside, the mill features a stout collared principal-rafter roof, with the principals halved at the apex and ashlared at the eaves, with all joints pegged. The machinery is in working order and includes two stones: French burrs for wholemeal flour and Derbyshire grit for barley. There is also an 18th-century stone fireplace with a peat slab.
