Description

Kilton Mill is a watermill dating from the mid-18th century, with the left-hand section subsequently refronted in the early or mid-19th century. The site incorporates the remains of an earlier mill from the 14th century. The building is constructed of dressed sandstone, with hammer-dressed sandstone used for the refronted portion. The roof originally had clay pantiles, but the right-hand end now has 20th-century concrete tiles. Stone ridge and gable copings, along with block kneelers, are present. The mill is two storeys high with a basement, and comprises three bays. A boarded door and overlight are located on the right-hand side; the staircase leading to this doorway is missing. Ground floor windows, and the window on the first floor to the right, feature slender timber mullions, although the glass is now missing, as are the window frames. A central stable door is found in the basement, along with similar mullioned windows to the left and right. The wheel housing on the right includes an altered window to the right of the boarded door. A boarded door, for access to the race, is located to the right of a passage in the basement. A stack is situated at the north-east angle of the wheel housing. Five stone steps lead to a boarded door in the return of the mill on the left-hand side. Inside, the tie beam supports queenpost roof trusses with spur-ties at eaves level, braced back to the lower tie. There are two levels of butt purlins. 19th-century mill machinery and an undershot wheel remain intact. At the time of survey, the mill was disused and dilapidated.
