Description
Hingham Mill is a mill built around the late 18th century on the site of an earlier mill. It is constructed of stone rubble, with the rear wall rebuilt in concrete block. The roof is covered in rag slate and has half hipped ends. An undershot water wheel is located on the left-hand side of the building.
The mill has an overall rectangular plan featuring a central entrance, with the water wheel on the left side wall and an entrance to a low basement at the rear. A mill race, measuring approximately 5 meters long and up to 1.5 meters wide, leads into the wheel from the adjacent road on the entrance side. The race is lined with stone, some of which is rendered in cement, and there are two stone steps at the road end.
The exterior features a two-storey front elevation with a 20th-century porch and 2-light casement windows on both the right and left sides. The rear elevation has a stone rubble wall that has been rebuilt in concrete block above the basement, with three 2-light casements on both the ground and first floors. The timber undershot wheel on the left side has been partly rebuilt in the 20th century and is socketted to a metal hub, revolving on an iron axial shaft.
Inside, the mill retains complete working machinery, including horizontal gearing that operates two French Buhr runner stones. The mill has historical significance, having been mentioned as a fulling mill in 1420 and recorded in the Rent Rolls of the Manor of Bernier in 1540. It is notable for retaining its full working machinery and having an undershot wheel, which is particularly unusual in Cornwall.
