Description

Cenarth Mill is a late 18th century mill that was restored between 1984 and 1986. It is constructed from rubble stone with a slate roof and features a stone stack at the southern end. The building has two storeys and a loft. The west front has two windows on the upper floor, with a small square recess beneath the eaves in the center, which may have been intended for a plaque. On the ground floor, there is a narrow door to the left, a window in the center, and a stable door to the right, which includes a small glazed panel. The windows are 20th century replacements; originally, they were sash windows, and now they are small-paned casements. All openings have timber lintels, and the windows have slate sills.

The southern end of the mill has a later addition for a kiln house, which features stable doors on both the ground and first floors at an angle to the main structure. The upper door is connected by a concrete platform to a door in the southern end of the main mill. There is also a small boarded window on the first floor. The main mill has a large iron undershot waterwheel with timber paddles at the northern end, and there is a pair of casement windows in the gable. The rear of the building has two renewed 8-pane casements above, with a small square recess between them, and two renewed 6-pane casements below, along with another smaller window set lower to the right. The rear of the kiln house includes one small boarded window.

Inside, the mill retains complete surviving machinery from the late 18th century or early 19th century, which was later refurbished in the 19th century. The ground floor features a massive chamfered beam, with two similar beams on the first floor. The roof has three pegged trusses with scarfed cruck feet and nailed collars. Modifications to the original machinery include the replacement of the wooden main wheel shaft with a cast-iron one, the replacement of the horizontal lay-shafts driven from the crown-wheel, the addition of an iron gear-ring to the spur wheel, and likely the replacement of wooden gears with cast-iron ones.
