Description

Smithy Cottage, originally a school from the early 19th century, is attached to a former smithy built in 1860. It features grey coursed rubble stone and slate roofs. The former school has stone end wall stacks, with the larger stack on the left. It is two stories high and has a three-window front, showcasing three large pointed casement windows above, each with nine panes, steep traceried heads, stone voussoirs, and slate sills. The ground floor includes a ledged door to the left and a nine-pane casement window in the center, both with stone voussoirs and cambered heads. There is also a blocked cart-entry to the right, which has a broad depressed arch, stone voussoirs, and a keystone, along with inserted 20th-century four-light casements. To the left, there is a whitewashed rendered 20th-century addition, and a large addition at the rear southeast.

The smithy is a single-storey, double-fronted structure with a 20th-century window on each side of a stable door, featuring stone voussoirs and keystones above cambered heads. There is a similar window on the east end wall. A corrugated iron lean-to extends from the front. Inside, there is a broad rear door, two hearths located in the southeast and southwest corners, a slate flagged floor, and a collar-truss roof. A large 20th-century addition is located at the back.
