Description
Number 18 and the adjacent old smithy is a house and smithy located in Acklington Village. The smithy and the ground floor of the east part of the house date from the 18th century, while the house was enlarged in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from roughly-coursed rubble with tooled dressings and features cut quoins on the house. It has a Welsh slate roof with brick stacks and is arranged in an overall L-plan.
The house has two storeys and consists of one bay on the left and one bay on the right. The projecting left bay features paired 6-pane casement windows and a slit beneath a coped gable supported by moulded kneelers. There is a rendered lateral stack on the left return and similar fenestration along with a renewed door on the two-bay right return. The right bay displays similar windows and a coped gable on moulded kneelers, with the right end stack rebuilt on an old base.
Attached to the right is a single-storey smithy, which includes a boarded door, two stable doors, and a window with blacksmith's glazing. The coped right gable has an old brick end stack with a chamfered stone cap, and there is a stable door at the rear of the smithy. All openings are framed with chamfered surrounds.
The interior has not been inspected in detail, but remnants of the old forge are still present.
