Description
This is a mid-19th century railway goods shed, likely designed by Benjamin Green for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway Company. Constructed of squared, tooled stone with raised and tooled ashlar dressings, it features a Welsh slate roof and is built in a Free Tudor style.
The east elevation has two bays. It includes a chamfered plinth and large segmental pointed arches. The right-hand arch contains boarded double doors, while the left-hand arch has a boarded brick wall above it. A pilaster buttress sits between the arches. The roof has overhanging eaves supported by raking timber brackets, with coped gables on moulded kneelers and topped by ball finials. The right return shows boarded double doors within a segmental-pointed arch in an alternating-block surround, alongside a two-light window with 12-pane casements. A large stepped buttress is located at the left end, and a boarded elliptical-arched opening is in the gable. The left return mirrors this design with a similar arch and gable opening. The rear elevation features two two-light windows with 12-pane casements, a pilaster buttress between them, and a large stepped buttress at each end. Straight dripmoulds cover the windows and gable openings.
Inside, the roof is a Queen-post design.
This building represents a rare, unaltered example of an early goods shed. A later attached building to the south, where the windows have been altered, is not considered to be of special interest.
