Description
The lych gate to the Church of St. John the Divine is a World War I memorial built around 1920. It features a pegged oak frame with pebbledashed gable infill set on an ashlar base, topped with a Lakeland slate roof. The low walls have chamfered coping that supports an open frame. Arched heads are present on the panels flanking the entrance, which is defined by a three-centred arch created by linked braces. Inside, there is a cambered and brattished tie-beam with an incised gilded inscription. The gate is adorned with ogee-arched cusped bargeboards and has panelled double gates with shaped hinges. Each return displays three open arched panels, and the rear elevation mirrors the front. Inside, there are stone seats and a crown-post roof.
