Description
Acklington Church of England Controlled First School is a school building dated 1852. It is constructed of snecked stone with tooled quoins and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring two stacks that have been rebuilt in brick. The building is designed in a T-plan and is in the Tudor style, consisting of one storey with one and one bays.
The left bay has a large window containing 4-pane casements, while a similar window on the right is blocked and partly obscured by a cross-wing outshut. There is a stepped ridge stack with a chamfered cap. The projecting right bay is the end of the cross-wing, which displays a 4-light mullioned window with 12-pane sashes and paired 6-pane casements above, along with a slit below the rebuilt stack on the gable. The end of the outshut to the left features a renewed door in a chamfered surround, topped by a shield-shaped datestone with a Percy crescent.
The right return has three bays, with the gabled centre bay showing a blocked pointed doorway and a 2-light window in the gable, beneath a gabled bellcote with a pointed arch. The rear of the wing has similar window features to the street front.
