Description

The Old Church School is a former school building, dating from approximately 1831, converted into four dwellings around 1983. A further section was added in 1877. Constructed from tooled dressed sandstone, the building has a Welsh slate roof and stone chimney stacks. It is built in a Tudor style. The building is one and two storeys high, with eight bays in total; the fourth bay projecting and two-storeyed. A continuous plinth runs around the base. Doors are located in the second and fifth bays, both set beneath hoodmoulds. A large projecting chimney breast is situated to the right of the fifth bay door, and a door with a four-centred head is found in the right return of the projecting bay. Windows are predominantly double-chamfered with stone mullions, originally containing two or three lights and set beneath hoodmoulds. These have been replaced with casements. Number 1 at the left has a parapet that rises to form a small gable above the window on the left. The corner at the left end is canted, surmounted by a squat stack. Each section has a pitched roof with stone-coped gables. Number 3 features a gabled bellcote with pointed openings. The left return of Number 1 has two bays featuring two lancet windows separated by a buttress supporting a squat octagonal bellcote with shouldered openings and a stone spirelet.
