Description

The Old Rectory and Hurworth Hall West are two houses that were originally one building, dating from around 1840. They are constructed from sandstone ashlar and feature Welsh slate roofs and dressed stone chimney stacks.

The Old Rectory, which is No. 52, is a two-storey, four-bay structure with a plinth and a band between the storeys. The doorway, located in the third bay, has a six-panel door flanked by three-pane sidelights and a segmental-arched fanlight, all set within a wide stone surround that includes pilasters and an entablature. The windows are 20-pane sashes with deep square-cut reveals and projecting sills. The roof is low-pitched and hipped, with overhanging eaves and a central transverse ridge stack.

Hurworth Hall West, which is No. 53, is also two storeys and has four bays. It features a mid-20th century doorway and primarily 12-pane sashes in deep square-cut reveals with projecting sills. The roof is low-pitched with overhanging eaves and is hipped over the right return, with a central ridge stack. There is a two-storey canted bay on the altered rear of The Old Rectory. A mid-20th century addition on the left return of The Old Rectory is not of interest. Hurworth Hall West is included for its group value with The Old Rectory.
