Description
Old Hall Cottage, along with Old Hall and Old Hall Cottage East, is a hall, now divided into three houses, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The construction is of rubble, with brick dressings, and has Welsh slate roofs. The building is arranged with two and three storeys, and has a 1:5:1 bay arrangement. The central three-storey block (Old Hall) is flanked by two-storey wings projecting to the front. The central Old Hall has a 20th-century hardwood door with carved panels beneath an overlight, set within an architrave which features a pulvinated frieze and a pediment. Sash windows are present, with smaller windows on the second floor, the central bay being blind, and all are set within brick flat arches. It has a hipped roof and brick end stacks. To the left is Old Hall Cottage, and to the right, Old Hall Cottage East. Old Hall Cottage has a board door in a former window opening, and a four-pane sash window to its left, and a similar window on the first floor, all with brick flat arches. It also has a hipped roof and a stack at the left end. Old Hall Cottage East has four-pane sash windows with brick flat arches – two on the ground floor, and one on the first floor – and features a hipped roof, a stack at the right end, and an entry on the right return.
Inside Old Hall, the windows have fielded-panel shutters and doors are made of six fielded panels with L-hinges. One ground-floor room has a fireplace with an egg-and-dart motif to the surround and a Greek key motif to the frieze, with an egg-and-dart motif below the mantel shelf. Flanking cupboards have doors of six fielded panels with H-hinges, a chair rail, and a cornice with egg-and-dart and acanthus motifs. The hall features a dentil cornice, a dogleg staircase with column-on-large-vase balusters, and above, a modillion cornice and a Greek key motif to the plasterwork on the beam. Old Hall Cottage has a rich modillion cornice, panelling, a chair rail, and a shouldered and eared overmantel to a 19th-century marble fireplace in the ground-floor front room. Old Hall Cottage East has a large fireplace with a brick segmental arch, now filled in, and a turned-baluster staircase in the ground-floor front room (former kitchen end). The interior features of this complex are unusually rich for the area, contrasting with the plain exterior.
