Description

Two houses, built in the late 18th century, with 20th-century additions and alterations. They are constructed of coursed sandstone with pantile roofs, featuring stone slates along the eaves. The houses follow a U-shaped plan, boasting two projecting front wings and a rear range to the right. The arrangement is two storeys high, with a 1:2:1 bay arrangement.

The central range has, on the ground floor from left, a round-arched window with intersecting glazing bars; a sash window; and a board door leading to the central passage, with a lintel scored to resemble voussoirs. An added lean-to extends from here, featuring paired sash windows and a four-panel door with an overlight. The first floor of the central range has a 20th-century casement window and a sash window.

The wings each have a Venetian window on the ground floor, with ashlar surrounds – the window on the left has sash windows with intersecting glazing bars, and the one on the right has sash windows. Above these, on the first floor, are windows within ashlar surrounds; the left window is a 20th-century casement, and the right a sash window. The inner return of the left wing has a 20th-century ground-floor window and blocked original window openings on both ground and first floors. On the inner return of the right wing is a blocked, painted, ground-floor round-arched window, designed to look as if it has intersecting glazing bars, and a first-floor sash window. The wings have hipped roofs. The chimneys are of white brick at the ends, and red brick in the centre.

To the left of West Dilston House is a 1950s addition, a one-bay range which is not considered to be of special interest. The right return of East Dilston House incorporates a brick gable end, which appears to indicate the presence of an earlier house on the site.

Internally, both houses retain late 18th-century cornices. East Dilston House has an ashlar fireplace surround in the rear range. East Dilston House has historically been used by village doctors for several generations and has been altered to provide an additional entrance, dispensary, and surgery.
