Description
Aldbrough St John Cottage is a house built in the early to mid-19th century. It features coursed sandstone on the front elevation and rubble on the other sides, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The cottage is two storeys high and has two bays, with quoins at the corners. The central entrance consists of a four-panel door set in a raised ashlar surround, which includes bases, three paterae on the frieze, and a moulded arris. Tuscan corbels, each adorned with a patera, support the cornice above. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, also framed in raised ashlar surrounds. The building has shaped kneelers and ashlar coping, along with brick stacks at the ends. To the right of the cottage, there is a single-storey garage with leaved board doors. Historically, the house was owned by the village butcher, who used the rear outbuildings for slaughtering animals and sold meat from a shop located here. The cottage is included for its group value.
