Description

Nos 634 and 636 Great Horton Road, along with No 3 Westcroft Road, were formerly known as Hall's House. This building was constructed in 1697 by James Hall, a manufacturer and merchant, and was divided into tenements in the 19th century. It is a two-storey house with a symmetrical front, made of evenly coursed sandstone "brick," featuring some flush quoining at the east corner. The roof is made of stone slate, with saddlestones and shaped kneelers crafted from gritstone. There are off-centre chimney stacks on the ridge and a weathered string course between the storeys. The façade has three windows that are symmetrical around the original central doorway, which has three light chamfered mullion windows; the left window is an intact six-light version. The weathered storey is raised above the lintel of the central entrance, which is inscribed with "H over 16:IM:97." The doorway features moulded jambs and imposts, and above it is an upright oval window carved from a single block. The east gable end also has an oval window with panelled spandrels. The rear of No 634 includes two light chamfered mullion windows and a narrow round-arched ground floor light. The property still retains a dry-walled front garden.
