Description

Great Horton Methodist Church is a substantial church built in 1814 and renovated, with a likely refronting in 1862. It is set back from the road and constructed of fine quality sandstone ashlar, featuring an impressive temple-style elevation. The church has a tetrastyle giant Corinthian portico in antis, with quoin pilasters flanking one window in the side bays, topped by ornate swagged handle urns above a mutule cornice of a deep entablature. Above the portico is a large bracketed pediment that contains a date cartouche in a scrolled surround with an anthemion crest, and it is crowned by an anthemion acroterion. The flanking bays feature segmental arched windows with eared architrave surrounds on the ground floor, while the first-floor windows are pilaster-framed with segmental pediments. The wall in antis has archivolt arched windows, a sill band, and panelled aprons, along with three archivolt arched doorways that have console keystones. One bay has quoin pilastered returns with similar fenestration to the end bays of the front, while the rest of the side windows are archivolt arched. The interior of the church has been modernised.
