Description

Nos 670 and 670A on Great Horton Road is a substantial hall built in 1746, originally known as Brooksbank House. It served as the principal residence of the Brooksbank family, who were significant figures in Horton Magna during the 17th and early 18th centuries. The building features a rectangular plan, a hipped stone slate roof, and symmetrical window arrangements that reflect a growing appreciation for classical proportions, while still retaining many traditional vernacular details.

The hall is two-storeys high and constructed from large sandstone "bricks." It has a plat band and corbel brackets at the eaves, along with corniced chimneys. The broad front is distinguished by four large six-light chamfered mullion and transom windows. An original weather-coped doorhead is positioned below the eaves, and there is a later 18th-century eared architrave doorway topped with a pediment. The entrance is inscribed with "GB 1746," indicating Gilbert Brooksbank.

On the east side, large cross-mullioned windows flank a three-light stair window. The rear of the building features flanking wings, with gables topped by corniced chimneys and parapets that have moulded coping rising to them.
