Description
The Old Sunday School, formerly known as Great Horton United Reformed Church, is a substantial chapel renovated in 1851-52. It features restrained early 19th century classical details. The building has a two-storey elevation made of thin sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings and a hipped slate roof. Notable architectural elements include a plinth, a ground floor impost string, a moulded string course, a sill band, and a moulded eaves cornice.
At the first floor level, there are five round-headed windows with squared ashlar surrounds, key and impost blocks, with the central window designed in a plain Venetian style. The ground floor has similar single windows flanking a central overarched Venetian window. Large doorways at each end of the front are framed by eared architrave surrounds, with carved consoles supporting pediments above. The interior is plain, featuring a gallery supported by cast iron columns.
