Description

The main blocks forming Great Horton First School and Middle School, along with the Master's House to the north, were built in 1886 and designed by architects Morley and Woodhouse. This complex is a notable example of the Bradford School Board competition design. It consists of two large single-storey blocks and a Master's House to the right. The buildings are constructed from sandstone "bricks" with ashlar dressings and exhibit elements of the Queen Anne revival style.

The fronts of the two blocks feature projecting wings with large mullioned transomed windows on either side of a recessed centre that contains two large Venetian windows, topped with pedimented gables and crowned by ball finials, supported by scrolled brackets. The main hall rises behind the centre, showcasing tall swept supports to a pedimented gable. The south-west block mirrors this design but has only one Venetian window at the centre. The adjacent Master's House is a compact two-storey structure made of sandstone "brick" with ashlar groove pilasters, also topped with ball finials, and features a hipped slate roof. The ground floor includes mullioned transomed windows set in rectangular bays.
