Description

This is an outbuilding, originally stables or loose boxes, dating to the early and mid-18th century, with two distinct phases of construction. It is now used as garages and storage space. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble with brick patching, and has been painted white on the front and side returns. It is covered by a pantiled roof with a brick chimney stack. The outbuilding is a long range with altered openings. The taller, single-storey left section has six openings: modern garage doors, a 12-pane sash window, and four doorways with arched brick heads, one featuring a radial fanlight. The slightly taller two-storey right section has a wide modern garage opening, a boarded door, and four scattered, partly-glazed hit-and-miss windows, all with arched brick heads. A two-step horse-mounting block is located at the centre of the building. The steeply-pitched roof has swept eaves and raised verges at the ends and at the junction between the two sections. The roof reaches a peak ridge height across both sections, with an off-centre brick ridge stack on the left section. Brick and rubble lean-to sheds with pent roofs have been added to the rear. The outbuilding is included for its group value with No. 4. No. 4, situated at a right angle, has been significantly altered and is not of special interest in itself.
