Description

Whalton Church of England Aided School is a school building dated 1831. It is constructed of squared stone with cut dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is in an L-plan and is single storey with two bays. There is a central projecting porch featuring boarded double doors, which are set in a double-chamfered surround with a flat-pointed arch and sunk spandrels, all under a hoodmould. Above the porch is a date tablet, and the gable is coped on shaped kneelers with finials.

On either side of the porch are flanking 3-light chamfered mullioned windows, which have been renewed with new glazing. The eaves are supported by block corbels. The gables are coped with shaped kneelers, and there are end stacks on corbels; the left stack is stepped and corniced with a diagonally-set shaft, while the right stack has been rebuilt on an old base. The left return of the building features a renewed casement window in a chamfered surround, and to the left, there is a set-back two-bay rear wing with 3-light windows.

A 20th-century two-bay north extension is present but is not of special interest.
