Description

Clark Hill and Clark Hill Cottage, along with the adjoining barn, are two houses and a barn located in Askham The Green. Clark Hill Cottage is dated 1674 above the entrance, while Clark Hill is from the late 18th century, both featuring 19th-century alterations. The buildings have mixed sandstone rubble walls, which are partly covered with incised roughcast, and Clark Hill is also painted. They have graduated greenslate roofs with banded limestone chimney stacks that are partly roughcast.

Clark Hill Cottage is two storeys high with three bays, and it has a left two-bay barn under a common roof. Clark Hill is also two storeys but has four bays and a slightly lower roof line. The cottage features a central 20th-century door set in a painted stone architrave, which is topped with an enriched scroll frieze that includes the initials 'L & DH' and a moulded cornice. It has double sash windows in 19th-century painted stone surrounds. The barn includes a right segmental-arched cart entrance with a small opening above it and a left slit vent.

Clark Hill has an off-centre 20th-century door with an overlight in a 19th-century painted stone surround, along with a further left plank door in an 18th-century painted stone surround. It also features double and triple sash windows in 19th-century painted stone surrounds, and left ground floor casement windows in 18th-century painted stone surrounds. From the rear, the right return wall of Clark Hill Cottage shows blocked small windows with chamfered surrounds. Note that the part of the barn now belonging to the adjoining General Stores is not included in the listing.
