Description

Primrose Cottage and Nos. 1 and 2 Hill Cottages are a house and a range of cottages located in Great Bardfield, dating from the 18th century and altered in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of rendered brick and have roofs made of handmade red clay tiles. Primrose Cottage, previously known as Hill House Cottage, has a rectangular plan and faces northwest. It features an internal stack on the left end and an external stack on the right end. The cottage is two storeys high and has a two-window range of late 19th-century sash windows with eight lights. The entrance has a late 19th-century door with a gabled canopy supported by pierced brackets.

Nos. 1 and 2 Hill Cottages consist of a line of five cottages at the rear, which are not combined, with their entrance elevation facing southwest and two axial stacks. These cottages are also two storeys tall. The more prominent northeast elevation, which faces Town Hall Square, has four horizontally sliding sash windows with eight lights and one 20th-century casement window on the ground floor. On the first floor, there are two similar sash windows and two 20th-century casement windows. Originally, these cottages were built as one storey with attics but were raised to two storeys in the early 19th century.
