Description

Inner, Middle and Outer Hillside Cottages are three cottages that have undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed from granite stone rubble with stone rubble stacks topped with plastered 20th-century brick, and feature thatched roofs. The cottages are arranged in a row, each with a one-room plan, built across a hillslope and facing southeast. The Inner Hillside Cottage, located at the right end, has a gable-end stack, while an axial stack between the Middle and Outer Hillside Cottages serves back-to-back fireplaces. It is suggested that these cottages may have originated from the subdivision of a 17th-century farmhouse, although there is no definitive evidence to confirm this.

All three cottages are two storeys high, as are some of the rear service outshots. The exterior presents an irregular overall four-window front with 20th-century casements, all featuring glazing bars except for the two-window section of Inner Hillside Cottage. Each cottage has a 20th-century glazed front door set behind a contemporary gabled porch supported by rustic posts. The roof is hipped on the left side and butts against the adjoining building on the right.

Inside, Inner Hillside Cottage includes a soffit-chamfered and scroll-stopped crossbeam, while its fireplace is blocked by a 20th-century grate. The roof is not accessible, but the bases of straight principals suggest the presence of likely 17th-century A-frame trusses, with the rear principals supported on wooden posts. Middle and Outer Hillside Cottages were not inspected during this survey but are believed to contain similar features, including a neatly soffit-chamfered axial beam observed in Outer Hillside Cottage. These cottages contribute to an attractive group of listed buildings around the crossroads.
