Description

Sandy Park Inn is a public house that likely dates from the 18th century, with expansions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from plastered stone rubble, possibly with some cob, and features stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. The roof is thatch, with felt and corrugated iron on the 20th-century extension.

The main block faces southeast and has a two-room plan with gable-end stacks. The larger right-hand room, now the bar, was the original part of the building. The two rooms have been combined, and the former middle room had an axial stack that backed onto the left room, but this stack is now disused. The left end room is likely a 19th-century extension, and there are 20th-century service outshots at the rear, one of which is two storeys tall. The main block is two storeys high.

The exterior features a nearly symmetrical three-window front with 20th-century casements that have glazing bars. There are two doorways between the window bays, both containing 20th-century plank doors in solid frames, set behind 20th-century gabled porches with thatch roofs. The roof is gable-ended.

The interior has been significantly altered in the 20th century to accommodate its current layout as a public house. The crossbeam, or the position of the former crosswall, has been replaced by a 20th-century RSJ that is boxed in with timber. However, the central fireplace is likely from the 18th century, built of granite ashlar, though its lintel is obscured. The roof was not inspected.

Sandy Park Inn is part of an attractive group of listed buildings located at the crossroads.
