Description
Hillside Cottage and No. 1 is a pair of cottages dating from the 17th century, possibly incorporating an earlier plan. They are constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings and feature a gabled-end corrugated iron roof. The original structure may have been a three-room cross-passage plan house, while the right-hand extension, which has a slate gabled-end roof, was added after 1950. The older part of the building is heated by two external rear lateral stacks with tall 19th or 20th-century brick shafts.
The cottages are two storeys high and have a front elevation with a three-window range, excluding the later 1950 work. The first floor has three-light casement windows with lintels at eaves level, while the ground floor features three three-light casement windows and two doors, one of which is inserted into the service end and has a late 20th-century lean-to brick porch. The interior includes a hall with one cross ceiling beam that has ovolo moulding and two fillets with hollow step stops. The service-end room has a single chamfered ceiling beam with run-out stops, and the roof trusses rest on posts.
