Description
Nutwell Lodge Hotel is a public house that was formerly a dwelling, originally remodeled in the 18th century from an earlier building. The exterior features blocked stucco and a hipped and gabled-end slate roof. The layout may have been a three-room, cross passage plan, with a right-hand external end stack likely heating the service end, a rear lateral stack that is now partially hidden by later additions, and an axial stack towards the left-hand end that is a later insertion. There is a rear wing with an end stack, all featuring brick shafts, while the axial stack is plastered. The internal arrangements on the ground floor have been altered too much to confirm the original plan type, and the upper floor and roof space were not inspected.
The building is two storeys high. The front, facing Exmouth Road, has a regular six-window range with a dentilled cornice that returns on the right-hand elevation. Both the first and ground floors have identical fenestration, featuring four large and two small two-pane horned sash windows. Since its original listing in 1952, later lower two-storey extensions have been added to the left and in front of the building. The rear includes a late 19th-century conservatory attached to the wing and a single-storey extension, possibly originally a billiards room, which has large twelve-pane hornless sash windows and a separate roof. The rear entrance appears to be out of place, featuring a porch with two Tuscan columns and pilasters, topped with an entablature.
