Description

Gulliford Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid to late 17th century, with additions and alterations in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The main structure is of plastered cob on stone footings, with gabled-end slate roofs. The house originally had a symmetrical two-room plan, with a wide central through-passage, and a symmetrically designed front. It includes a rear wing and a later front wing, possibly from the 18th century. External brick stacks are located at both ends of the house, one with small late 17th-century bricks. It is two storeys high throughout.

The front elevation has a symmetrical five-window range; tall two-light windows are present on both floors, featuring 19th-century casements with eight panes per light. The window embrasures likely retain original keystones. There's a central open porch with a slate roof (19th century), and the door surround is possibly from the late 17th or 18th century. Two two-light windows are visible on the inner face of the front wing, and a 20th-century window is set into the gable end facing the road. The rear wing has some 19th-century casement windows. A two-storey brick addition from the 20th century sits in the angle formed by the rear wing and the main range.

Inside, the left-hand room features an end fireplace with a lintel displaying run-out stops. The jambs are decorated with white tulips (or possibly teasles or poppies) carved into slate-blue plasterwork; there are remnants of diaper work on the fireback. The right-hand room has a boxed ceiling beam and a blocked fireplace. Cross beams are found in the front wing, with one from the 18th century replacing the original external wall. A single early fielded panel door is present. The external right-hand end stack is now partially hidden within later additions. On the first floor, the left-hand end fireplace has bolection moulding, and a large fielded panel overmantel, consistent with the late 17th century. Two contemporary fielded panel doors are also present. A late 17th-century dog-leg staircase remains, with bobbin balusters; in the attic, the balusters are of a simpler splat section, pegged to a rail. Attic doors include one with a fielded panel, and others that are simply planked, using HL and butterfly hinges.

The roof structure consists of five bays to the main range and four to the rear wing, with straight principals morticed and pegged at the apex, and collars halved and pegged. The building is an important local example of a two-room, central-passage plan house with a symmetrical front achieved through the addition of a rear service wing; the interior features are also of particular interest.
