Description
South Lodge, along with its gates, gate piers, and a section of wall, is located immediately southwest of the main estate. This structure was formerly the lodge for The Belvedere and Nutwell Court and dates back to the early 19th century. The lodge is constructed of rendered brick and features a hipped slate roof that extends as a catslide over a simple veranda facing the driveway.
The layout includes a front room with a central entrance and a service room at the back. It is a single-storey building with 2-light leaded windows that have transoms, and a fielded panel door. Notably, there is an axial stack with a chimney pot designed to resemble a castle, complete with two towers flanking an entrance that features a portcullis and the motto "PLUS ULTRA."
The wrought-iron double gates, likely from the 20th century, are set between square-section limestone piers that have moulded caps. There is also a quadrant brick wall resting on a chamfered limestone plinth, topped with flat coping, and brick outer piers.
