Description

Figgins is a detached house located on Church Road in Lympstone. It was built in the early 19th century, with an earlier rear wing. The exterior is finished in blocked stucco and some cob, resting on limestone footings, topped with a hipped slate roof that features lead rolls at the hips and ridge, along with deep eaves. The house has an L-shaped plan, with the front range being single-depth. There are rooms on either side of the entrance hall, which has a rear outshut heated by a rear stack. The wing is heated by a lateral stack on the right-hand elevation, with both chimney shafts plastered. The stairs are situated at the inner angle where the two ranges meet.

The house is two storeys tall, with a symmetrical front featuring a three-window range, pilaster quoins, and first-floor casement windows with two lights, the center window being narrower than the others. There are tall, two-light casement windows on either side of the doorway, which has a panelled door and a rectangular fanlight above it, supported by a canopy on shaped brackets. The eaves have a decorative shaped fascia. The rear wing includes casement windows and one sliding sash window with wooden guiding keys. Inside, the roof of the wing has straight principals that are crossed and pegged at the apex, extending into the roof space of the front wing. This feature, along with the position of the stairs, suggests that the rear wing was built before the 19th century, although a precise date cannot be determined.
