Description

A pair of semi-detached houses, The Corner House and Claremont, stand on a prominent corner site in Lympstone. They were built around 1800. The houses are constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a hipped slate roof. Claremont, the house on the right, has principal rooms on either side of an entrance passage that contains a staircase to the rear, with secondary rooms positioned behind and a rear service wing. The Corner House, to the left, has an entrance hall on the right, with a rear staircase, a back room to the left, and a rear service room. A single stack rises forward of the roof ridge, over the party wall, along with a left-hand internal end stack, two rear internal lateral stacks, and an axial stack to the wings.

The front of the houses has a five-window range, with two windows to The Corner House and three to Claremont. The windows above each doorway are blocked. All other windows are 16-pane hornless sashes. The Corner House has a plain doorway, while Claremont’s doorway is centrally positioned and round-headed, featuring a panelled door with a semi-circular traceried fanlight. The houses have 2-light flat-roof dormers; that of The Corner House is slightly bowed. The left-hand elevation and wing have 16-pane hornless sash windows. A later 19th-century cross wing, with casement and sash windows, stands to the rear of this elevation. A slightly bowed 16-pane hornless sash window is visible on the right-hand elevation. The rear wing appears to be a later addition.
