Description
A pair of dwellings built around 1800, designed to appear as one large, symmetrical house. The houses are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with stuccoed sides, and have a hipped slate roof concealed behind a parapet. They are double-depth, incorporating two shallow rear wings; Greenhill occupies the three bays on the right and has two internal end stacks for heating, while Higher Greenhill is heated by stacks rising above the party wall. Staircases are positioned to the left of each house—against the outside wall in Higher Greenhill, and against the party wall in Greenhill.
The houses are three storeys high with a basement. The front is symmetrical, with five bays and a castellated parapet. The second-floor windows have six-pane hornless sashes, the first-floor windows have twelve-pane hornless sashes, and all are set within brick window arches. The ground-floor windows are round-headed and have two orders of surrounds, the outer order with small stone capitals, containing twelve-pane hornless sashes. A large porch with a barrel vault and traceried tympanum lies centrally, its doorway surround matching the ground-floor windows, and it has a fielded panel door with a contemporary knocker. Sash windows are present in the basement. A two-storey extension, set well back from the main front, occupies the right-hand side, featuring a parapet and a six-pane hornless sash window to the first floor, alongside a three-over-six pane sash window on the ground floor. A 20th-century porch with coloured glass margin panels is on the left-hand side.
The rear elevation has slate hanging across all but the ground floor. It features two round-headed, Gothic tracery windows on the second floor, a tall stairwell window with a twelve-pane hornless sash on Greenhill, and four- and sixteen-pane sash windows elsewhere. The rear extensions have been significantly altered and enlarged in the late 20th century.
Interiors include reeded architraves around doors and fire surrounds (except for ground floor fire surrounds that have been replaced), panelled doors, internal shutters, and fine open-well staircases rising through three floors. The staircase in Greenhill has a wreathed rail made of oak with inlaid walnut and stick balusters.
