Description
Thorn Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, possibly incorporating earlier work, located on the east side of Exmouth Road in Lympstone. The building is constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings and features a gabled-end pantiled roof. Originally designed as a three-room, through-passage plan house, the service end is situated to the right of the passage. The hall is heated by a large front external lateral stack, which has a pair of pantiled offsets. The inner room and service end are now both heated by internal front lateral stacks, which were presumably added in the 20th century.
At the rear, there is a wing that has been significantly remodeled, featuring an exceptionally tall brick end stack with many offsets, making it a notable feature in the local landscape. The farmhouse is two storeys high with a four-window range on the front. The first floor includes one two-light casement window and three three-light casement windows, while the ground floor has a two-light French window leading to the hall, a two-light casement window at the service end, and a planked, panelled, and quarter-glazed door to the passage.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to have a chamfered ceiling beam in the service end, a deeply chamfered beam in the hall, and an inner room ceiling beam with ovolo moulding. The roof appears to have straight principals that are crossed and pegged at the apex.
