Description
Vine Cottage is a detached house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone footings and features a hipped thatched roof. Originally, it had a three-room, cross-passage plan, with the service end located to the left of the passage and a small service-end rear wing. The service end is heated by an external end stack, while the hall is heated by a rear external lateral stack. The inner room, which was originally unheated, received an internal end stack, likely added in the 19th century. All stacks have brick shafts.
The house has two storeys and a front elevation with a three-window range. The first floor features two-light casement windows with lintels at eaves level, and there are two-light casement windows in each of the ground floor rooms. A lean-to pantiled open porch is present, along with a wide fielded panel door. The rear wing has a catslide roof and includes one small casement window on the inner face. Additionally, there is another two-light casement window on the first floor of the main elevation, positioned between the wing and the hall stack. The interior has not been inspected, but the ceiling beams appear to be from after the 17th century, with 19th-century joinery details visible.
