Description
Two cottages forming part of a row of houses likely dating from the early 17th century. They are built with roughcast cob walls on stone footings, and have a slate roof. Each cottage has a single-depth plan with one or two rooms, and is served by an axial chimney stack with brick shafts. Both cottages feature deeply recessed entrance doors. Number 2 has a large 20th-century casement window on both the ground and first floors. Number 3 has 20th-century casement windows on the first floor, likely in original openings, and two additional casement windows on the ground floor. Internally, both cottages retain a chamfered cross beam on the ground floor, and a later fireplace constructed of sandstone and brick supporting a smoke hood. Exposed roof timbers in Number 3, including the purlins, principal rafter, and collar beam, suggest that the original 17th-century roof structure remains. The cottages are designated at Grade II for their survival as substantially intact early 17th-century buildings, retaining their original axial chimney stack and roof structure.
