Description
Pax Cottage is an end cottage dating from the 17th century, part of a long row known as Baker's Cottages. A stone dated 1624 was reportedly removed several years ago. The walls are roughcast cob, set on stone footings, and the roof is thatched and hipped. The cottage is positioned at a right angle to the rest of Baker's Cottages, with its gable end facing Longmeadow Road, and is larger than the other cottages. It has a two-room plan; the left-hand room is heated by an internal front lateral stack with a brick shaft. The front elevation has an irregular two-window range, with two-light casement windows on each floor, and a planked door. The end elevation facing Longmeadow Road features a 20th-century casement window on the first floor and a 19th-century 12-pane horizontally sliding sash window with wooden sill guide pegs on the ground floor. The left-hand end elevation has a similar sliding sash window to the first floor. Internally, each room has chamfered ceiling cross beams, featuring hollow step stops, and one also has a moulded bracket. The roof trusses are straight where visible in the upper rooms.
