Description

Rogue's Roost, formerly known as Upcott, is a detached house, likely dating from the late 16th century, with significant alterations and enlargement in the 18th and 19th centuries. The walls are roughcast cob on stone footings, covered by a gabled-end pantiled roof. Originally designed as a 3-room, cross-passage farmhouse, the service wing is to the left of the passage, and a rear wing is at the higher end. An axial stack serves as the fireplace for the main hall, backing onto the site of the passage. The service end and inner room are heated by all-brick external stacks, likely from the 18th century; the stack on the right has numerous set-offs. The house presents an asymmetrical 4-window front. The ground floor has two 12-pane horizontally sliding sash windows, along with three casement windows and one 19th-century sash window with a transom, all of two lights. The first floor has a late 20th-century casement window and three 12-pane sash windows, the sills featuring wooden guide pegs. A doorway is sheltered by a canopy supported on shaped brackets. Modern guttering is secured by small brackets. Internally, there are some unchamfered cross ceiling beams in the service end and inner room, and some early 19th-century joinery. The roof was completely replaced approximately 20 years ago.
