Description
Nos. 3 and 4 are a pair of cottages dating from the 17th century, with later additions and alterations. They are constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings, topped with a thatched roof that has a gable end on the left and is hipped on the right. Originally, they likely started as a two-room cottage with a central entrance, which was extended to the right by the addition of one room in the 18th or 19th century. The left-hand end features an external stack, while there is an axial stack and a later internal all-brick stack at the right-hand end.
The cottages are two storeys high and have an irregular front with two window ranges. The first floor has a four-light window on the left and a three-light window on the right, both of which are casements set under eyebrow eaves. The ground floor has two three-light casement windows and two porches, one of which is thatched, both dating from the late 20th century. There is also a late 20th-century brick extension at the rear.
Inside, the left-hand cottage features two deeply chamfered cross beams, while the right-hand cottage has a shallow chamfered axial beam. The roof trusses in the older part have curved principals that are set low in the wall and are now boxed, but they may have originally been jointed crucks. The right-hand cottage has straight principals. The roof space is not accessible. Nos. 3 and 4, Exton, are part of a group of roughly contemporary cottages that includes Orchard Cottage and Brooke Cottage.
