Description
Lower Nutwell Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from around 1700. It is constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings and features a gabled-end thatched roof. The house has a two-room plan with a wide central through-passage, a rear wing, and a newel stair turret at the angle formed by these sections. The entire building sits on an uninterrupted plinth, indicating it was built as a single structure.
The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a symmetrical front that has a three-window range. The first floor has two- and three-light 19th-century casement windows with lintels at eaves level, while both ground-floor rooms feature two-light casement windows under depressed window arches. The central doorway is sheltered by a hipped slate canopy. The rear wing also has two-light 19th-century casement windows.
A notable feature of the house is the stair turret, which is partially hidden by a mid-19th century two-storey flat-roofed extension. Inside, there are some contemporary doors with HL hinges or fleur-de-lis strap hinges, and some of the treads and risers of the stair appear to be original. The roof space was not inspected, but the visible principals in the upper rooms are straight. This farmhouse is a good and unspoilt example of a 17th-century plan type.
