Description
Nos 1 and 2 High Street are a pair of cottages, possibly from the 17th century or early 18th century, that have been significantly altered in the 19th century. They are constructed of roughcast cob and stone, topped with a gable end slate roof featuring red ridge tiles. The original layout is unclear, but it may have been designed as a three-room house with a cross passage. No. 2, on the right, likely contained the passage and service area, heated by an end stack, while no. 1 included the hall, heated by an axial stack backing onto the passage, and an inner room heated by a rear lateral stack. All stacks are made of brick, with the axial stack featuring some old bricks, possibly from the 18th century.
The cottages are two storeys high. The front of no. 2 is set back slightly and features a four-window range, although it originally had a blocked window that is not visible from the outside. All windows are 3-light casement windows from the 19th century, with the ground floor having two doorways and four 3-light casement windows. The casements of no. 2 are early 19th century. The left end has one 3-light casement window on the first floor and one 2-light window below, while there is a small ground-floor window on the right-hand end. The rear includes a lean-to for no. 2 and a two-storey, flat-roofed extension for no. 1, both featuring 20th-century casement windows.
Inside no. 1, the left room has a rear fireplace with stone jambs and a timber lintel that has a shallow chamfer, while no. 2 features a deeply chamfered axial ceiling beam. Nos 1 and 2 face nos 3 and 4 across High Street, forming an attractive group.
