Description

The Old Golden Lion is a house located on Fore Street in Kentisbeare, likely built in the late 17th century. It features roughcast cob construction and has a gable end roof covered with asbestos slate, along with a later stone and slate outshut. Originally designed as a four-room house with a baffle-entry plan, the two rooms to the right of the entry have been combined into one. The house has an axial cob stack with a brick shaft that contains some old, possibly original, bricks, and a 20th-century internal end stack on the right.

The building has two storeys and a front facade with five windows. On the first floor, there is a three-light casement window on the left and a four-light casement window on the right, both of which are original and feature chamfered surrounds and mullions, with eight leaded panes per light and saddle bars. There are also two additional four-light windows and one two-light window, which may date from the 18th century and have pegged frames with either eight or twelve leaded panes, some of which are made of crown glass. On the ground floor, there is a five-light casement window to the right of the passage with a pegged frame and leaded lights, while the other ground floor windows are from the 20th century, including replacements for a shop window on the left. The rear of the house includes a 20th-century two-storey wing and late casement windows.

Inside, the rooms to both the left and right of the entry have unchamfered axial ceiling beams. The fireplace lintel in the left-hand room is chamfered with run-out stops and features a later curved brick back. Between this room and the baffle entry, there is a stud and plaster partition.
