Description

The Market House Inn is a public house located in Dartmouth, dating from the mid-19th century. It features a stucco exterior on stone rubble, with end and rear lateral stacks that have brick chimney shafts and some old pots, topped by a slate roof.

The building has a square plan, originally designed with two rooms wide and double-depth. It stands three storeys tall, with a symmetrical front that has three windows fitted with horned sashes that lack glazing bars. There is no window in the centre of the first floor, and a blind window is positioned above it. The central doorway features a 20th-century panelled door. A timber box cornice and parapet adorn the top of the building. The twin roofs are parallel to the street and hipped at both ends.

Notable features include a very good 19th-century lamp and bracket located at the right corner on the second floor, with a curving bracket that has scrolled wrought-ironwork and supports an unusually large lantern. The right end wall has a 6/2-pane sash window. A lean-to extension includes a continuous range of mullioned windows with leaded glass and another doorway.

Inside, although the ground floor has been gutted, some 19th-century features remain, and more are suspected to be present on the upper floors.
