Description
No. 3 Foss Street is a shop with a house above, likely built in the 18th century, with some modernizations from the 19th and 20th centuries. It features mixed construction of stone rubble and a plastered timber-framed front, with no visible chimney shafts and a slate roof. The building is three storeys high with an attic and has a two-window range on the first floor. The plaster front is lightly treated to resemble ashlar. The 20th-century shop front includes a three-light window and a shop door to the right, while the house doorway, which is recessed to the left, also contains a 20th-century door. Above, there are horned four-pane sash windows. The moulded timber eaves feature a large modillion frieze, and the roof is parallel gable-ended with a front gabled dormer. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Foss Street follows the line of a medieval dyke that dammed a tidal creek and included a tidal mill. The mill pool was filled in and developed around 1820-30, although houses along Foss Street date back to the 17th century.
