Description

A shop with a house above, likely dating to around 1830 and altered in the late 19th century, stands on Market Street in Dartmouth. The building is constructed from stone rubble, with a plastered timber-framed front, and has end stacks with rendered brick shafts topped with old pots, all under a slate roof. The plan is of one room wide and two rooms deep, with end stacks.

The three-storey building has a two-window front. The late 19th-century shop front has been modernised in the 20th century. It features a timber design with a central doorway, originally covered by an overlight with glazing bars. The doorway now has a 20th-century glazed door with glazing bars, which is narrower than the original, and another similar 20th-century door serves the house at the left end, also under a plain overlight. The right-hand shop window retains its original glazing bars. The shop bays are defined by incised pilasters extending to a plain fascia. Above the shop, the plastered front has a two-window arrangement with horned four-pane sash windows. Deep eaves have a plastered soffit. The gabled roof has a front-gabled dormer with shaped bargeboards and a small horned four-pane sash window.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. The area was developed in the late 1820s and 1830s on a former mill pond site and contains a notable group of 19th-century buildings around the Market Square.
