Description
No. 13 Foss Street is a shop with a house above, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations. It features mixed construction, with stone rubble party walls and a plastered timber-framed front. The left end has a stack with a rendered brick chimney shaft and a slate roof. The building is one room wide and two rooms deep, with a passage along the right party wall.
The exterior is three storeys high and has a one-window range. The plastered front is lightly blocked out to resemble ashlar. The ground floor has an altered 19th-century timber two-bay shop front that lacks glazing bars, and there is a recessed doorway on the right end, which now contains a 20th-century door. The first and second floors each have a single mid-20th-century three-light window without glazing bars. There is a timber modillion eaves cornice, and the roof is shared with adjoining properties.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. Historically, Foss Street follows the line of a medieval dam that included a tidal mill. The mill pond was filled in and developed around 1820-30, although houses had been built along the Foss from the 17th century onwards.
